After losing a total of two matches last season, the Reds have already lost two of their four fixtures. Kickoff will be at 15:00 local time at Anfield in Liverpool, UK.
Liverpool enter Saturday’s match coming off a much needed victory two weeks ago in their last Premier League action. Liverpool found themselves down 2-1 at halftime to Bolton, threatening to leave them with three losses in their first four games. Fernando Torres pulled Liverpool even in the 56th minute. In the 82nd minute, captain Steven Gerrard found the back of the net to secure all three points for Liverpool and give them a much needed win. Burnley on the other hand went into the international break with a disappointing loss to Chelsea. After opening the season with a loss, Burnley shocked Manchester United with a 1-0 victory at Turf Moor. They followed up that success with a 1-0 victory at home over Everton, last year’s fifth place finishers. Chelsea proved too much for Burnley at Stamford Bridge however, dismantling Burnley in route to a 3-0 victory.
Burnley made a last minute move before the transfer window closed to try and bolster their squad. The Clarets picked up Portsmouth striker David Nugent on a six month loan. Burnley and Nugent have hopes of making the six month loan a permanent switch. Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez meanwhile has called out two of his key contributors. Ryan Babel and Albert Riera have expressed disappointment at their lack of time with the first team, and Babel in particular is concerned it will affect his status with Holland as the 2010 World Cup approaches next summer. Benitez said that he understands both players’ desire to be on the pitch, but they need to prove they are worthy first.
