There is more than a hint of uncertainty in the air as Hungary welcomes Sweden in a qualifier that could change the fate of both countries’ football futures. Even Hungary would not have imagined themselves in their current situation – 13 points from 6 games, second in the group and close to making a long awaited comeback appearance in the South African World Cup finals in 2010. As one of the first countries to have won the trophy when it was first borned, it would be a sentimental return for the Hungarians if they were to secure their place in the first World Cup to be held in Africa. While the playoffs are most likely next for them, they could still find themselves getting there automatically. First though, they need to beat the Swedes. That would be anything but easy despite Sweden being in fourth, which is really deceptive since they are just four points behind Hungary. A win for either side would be monumental in terms of where each country will be heading – Hungary towards a possible World Cup return while Sweden could make a comeback in terms of qualifying for a playoff date. Only two defeats count between them and that shows how competitive Group 1 has been.
